Not every game needs to take a giagantic leap between titles, especially when what made the previous game so great still works. God of War Ragnarök is refinement at its finest. It takes what works in the previous game and tunes its systems.

While I have yet to finish Xenoblade chronicles three I can definitively say it is a welcome addition to the Xenoblade series and I look forward to finishing it and playing the expanded story later this year.

I'm honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed Citizen Sleeper, an unusual combination of turn-based tabletop-style RPG, visual novel, management sim and survival game. The game casts the player as a "sleeper", a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body, waking on an unfamiliar space station which must then be explored, learning more about the societal background, finding a way to survive, make allies (and a few enemies) and, ultimately, thrive aboard or escape from the facility.

I simply adore pretty much every part of the world of Horizon, and Forbidden West takes everything from the already superb Zero Dawn, expanding and polishing it to achieve a masterpiece result. Absolutely the technical pinnacle of 2022's game releases, Forbidden West's expansive open-world is stunningly beautiful and a joy to explore. From the numerous settlements, to the imposing machines and the simple natural beauty through which they roam, the world of Forbidden West might be dying, but it always feels fantastically alive.

A dazzling transition to 3D. While there is still room for improvement, I cannot believe that HAL made the game that I wished for as a kid playing Mario 64. As a fan of the pink puff since the release of Kirby's Adventure, all I wanted was for him to get his own big 3D adventure. But it had to be Kirby in full, with new powers, hidden areas, boss fights, EX mode and all. And here it is, with a gorgeous soundtrack and the best postgame in the entire series. I love it.

As my first metroid game it was impressive how well the level design smoothly moved me from area to area while challenging me occasionally with fun bosses. Drew me right in and I wasn't released until I beat the final boss.

Rift Apart has pretty much everything you'd want in a Ratchet & Clank game (except I suppose the slight edginess and character friction from the PS2 games, but I wouldn't know about that as I never played them). It's a highly polished package with an arsenal of bizarre and wonderful weapons at your disposal, a bunch of fun environments to skate, grind and fly your way through, and plenty of intergalactic buffoonery and heroism in equal measure.

We all play a lot of games. They can at times blend together or have large overlaps. Returnal feels fresh. It is a arcade game blown up to AAA scale. Housemarque delivered a fantastic game, day 1, that had fantastic gameplay, sounded great, used the duelsense controller and kept me coming back for more.
